Hommage to Professore Angelo Marcello Cardani, Italian economist, IRG/BEREC Vice-Chair, President of AGCOM (Italy’s communications authority) and former senior official at the European Commission, in the Cabinet of Mario Monti
We express our deepest homage and heartfelt condolences to the family and, like us, former colleagues of Professore Cardani, whose passing marks the loss of a distinguished European regulator, scholar and public servant.
We express our sincere and heartfelt gratitude for his many years of dedicated professional service, commitment and professionalism. His sharp insight—combined with his intelligence, thoughtful perspective, and a refined sense of judgment and natural elegance, made him not only an outstanding colleague, but also a true pleasure to work with.
Vice Chair of the BEREC and of the Independent Regulators Group (IRG), President of AGCOM from 2012 to 2020, and Associate Professor of Economics at the Università Bocconi, Cardani stood at the intersection of academic excellence and public service. Serving alongside Mario Monti at the heart of the European Commission in Brussels—first in the Cabinet for the Internal Market, Financial Services and Taxation (1995–1999), and subsequently as Deputy Head of Cabinet for Competition Policy (1999–2004)—he contributed directly to the shaping of European market integration and competition policy. His brilliant academic career at Bocconi School of Management, NYU amongst others was enriched by significant international consulting such as with UNDP.
His career reflected a rare combination of intellectual rigor, institutional commitment, and European vision. He will be remembered with respect and gratitude by colleagues, students, and all those who had the privilege of working with him.
